Hendricks’s latest release EP! is the product of his writing escapades over the past year, dropping a single just about every month since February. It’s weird, incredibly clever, and mean spirited at times, but you can absolutely get busy to it as well!
And then there are the collage-like compositions and noise rock sensibilities, aspects seemingly aimed at causing maximum audience disorientation, lending to his tunes both a sense of a carnival ride and the bruising degidation of being tossed in an empty refrigerator box and kicked down a flight or two of an exterior fire escape. His flow plumbs the depths of smooth R’nB, and while elbow deep in these glistening pools, he lays hands on a bandelier of machete shaped triplets that he uses to clear a path through the sucker like they were stalks of bamboo. The way Hendricks builds busy house tracks only to break them apart and rethread them as ambient soundbites that might play as you initially open a weather app on your phone is both deviously charming and unconscionably, wilfully perverse.
