The music of PXIV, and like the music of many other true prog acts, is made of “moments”, catchy moments that you'll just leave your head after weeks. Metal is all about riffs (with a few exceptions, of course), but PXIV don't really give much emphasis to them the guitar playing is very varied throughout the album, but don't expect fantastic and memorable riffing. Well, it's hard for me to decide which style this american act plays, first of all because they clearly do not “respect the riff”, they do not focus too much on the guitar playing and on the riffs. Yes, because there are small (or, shall I say, big?) differences between these two styles, as you all should know. So, they are progressive, but now we must decide if they're a progressive rock or a progressive metal band. Perspective X IV are a band that easily fits this description. A prog tune is a tune that somehow progresses and changes, containing lots of different elements and an unusual structure, as opposed to the simple structures that are used on the majority of the tunes produced today. Obviously, they are not progressive, at least for me. Today, the term “progressive” is often misused: the majority of the modern power metal acts that, somehow, play relatively complex songs are immediately labeled as such. And the first question one might ask about them is obviously: “how do they sound like?”.Well, first of all, before pinpointing their specific genre, we can all agree that they truly play progressive music. Perspective X IV is a new progressive band, hailing from the United States of America, and they released their debut, Shadow of Doubt, during this year.
